If you’ve ever typed “business mentor” into Google, you’ve probably also seen the words business advisor, business consultant, business coach…
And suddenly you’re wondering if they all mean the same thing. They don’t.
And understanding the difference can save you a lot of time and money when you’re looking for the right kind of support.
So let’s break it down properly.
What Is a Business Mentor?
A business mentor is someone who supports you as a business owner - not just your business.
It’s less about telling you what to do, and more about helping you think clearly.
A mentor will:
Ask the right questions
Help you untangle your thoughts
Offer perspective from lived experience
Provide accountability
Support you through decision-making
It’s a relationship built on conversation, reflection and steady progress.
You’re not handed a fixed plan. You’re supported to build your own with someone in your corner.
What Is a Business Advisor?
A business advisor tends to focus more on the technical or strategic side of the business itself.
They might:
Analyse financial performance
Advise on structure or growth strategy
Help with forecasting
Provide specialist expertise in a specific area
It’s often more structured and task-focused.
Advisors can be incredibly valuable especially when you need technical input or specialist knowledge.
But the relationship is usually more directive and solution-led.
So… What’s the Difference?
Here’s the simplest way to look at it:
A business advisor focuses on the business.
A business mentor focuses on the business owner.
Both are useful. They just serve different purposes.
If you’re looking for someone to:
Tell you what structure to put in place
Review your financial model
Provide industry-specific expertise
You might need an advisor.
If you’re feeling:
Stuck
Overwhelmed
Unsure what your next step should be
Lacking confidence in your decisions
You might need a mentor.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
This is where it gets interesting. Sometimes you need both.
But most small business owners I speak to in Shropshire aren’t short of information.
They’re short of clarity. They’re short of space to think. They’re short of someone steady to talk things through with.
And that’s where mentoring comes in.
Not corporate frameworks. Not 200-slide strategy decks.
Just honest conversation, accountability and practical next steps.
If You’re a Small Business Owner in Shropshire…
Whether you’re based in Telford, Shrewsbury or anywhere across the county, the right kind of support can make a huge difference.
The key is choosing the type of support that matches where you are right now.
