Why Comparing Yourself to Other Business Owners Is Holding You Back

If I could wave a magic wand and help business owners stop doing one thing, it would probably be this. Comparing themselves to everyone else.
It's something I've seen countless times through mentoring, and if I'm honest, it's something I've experienced myself too. You only have to spend five minutes scrolling through social media before it starts. Someone's celebrating their biggest month ever. Someone else has just launched a new programme that's sold out overnight. Another business owner is sharing photos from an awards evening, a networking event or a dream client they've just signed.
Before you know it, you're questioning whether you're doing enough.
The Problem Is, You're Comparing Your Reality to Someone Else's Highlight Reel
Social media has an incredible way of making it look as though everyone else has everything figured out. What we rarely see are the quieter moments. The days when enquiries are slow. The evenings spent wondering if you've made the right decision. The failed launches, the cancelled meetings or the ideas that never quite worked out.
As business owners, we're often comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else's carefully chosen highlights, and that's never going to be a fair comparison.
Every Business Is on a Different Journey
One of the things I remind clients of regularly is that no two businesses are ever the same. Someone else's business might be five years older than yours. They might have a bigger team, a different target audience or a completely different set of financial commitments. They may even have invested in mentoring, coaching or support that has helped them get to where they are today.
When you only look at the outcome, it's easy to forget there was a journey to get there.
Your journey will look different, and that's exactly how it should be.
Comparison Can Quietly Knock Your Confidence
The trouble with constantly comparing yourself to others is that it doesn't just affect how you feel. It starts to affect how you behave.
You second guess your prices because someone else charges less. You delay posting on social media because someone else's content looks more polished. You hesitate to launch a new service because you're convinced somebody else is already doing it better.
Without realising it, comparison starts making decisions for you and can leave you feeling stuck, even when you're working incredibly hard. That's when it becomes a problem.
Focus on the Business You're Trying to Build
One of the questions I often ask in mentoring sessions is this:
"Are you building the business you want... or the business you think you should have?"
It's a simple question, but it usually gets people thinking.
Success looks different for everyone. For one business owner, success might mean employing a team of twenty people. For someone else, it might mean working four days a week while still having time to do the school run. Neither is right or wrong.
The important thing is that you're building a business that's aligned with your own goals, not somebody else's.
Celebrate Your Own Progress
It's very easy to overlook how far you've come because you're so busy looking ahead.
Take a moment to think about where your business was this time last year.
What have you learnt?
Who have you met?
What opportunities have come your way?
What challenges have you overcome?
Growth doesn't always arrive with fireworks. More often than not, it's found in the small wins that quietly add up over time. Those wins deserve celebrating too.
Final Thoughts
There will always be another business owner doing something bigger, faster or differently than you. But there will also be someone looking at your business and thinking, "I'd love to be where they are."
The only comparison that's really worth making is between the person you are today and the person you were yesterday.
Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep moving forward.
Your business doesn't need to look like anyone else's to be successful.
It simply needs to look like yours.
Ready to stop second-guessing yourself?
If you've found yourself constantly comparing your business to everyone else's, sometimes an outside perspective can make all the difference.
Through mentoring, I help business owners cut through the noise, trust their own instincts and keep moving forward with purpose, rather than constantly measuring themselves against everyone else.
