Do You Need More Support in Your Business? Here’s How to Know

Small business owner reflecting on what support they need in their business

At some point in business, most people realise they need some kind of support.

Not because they’re not capable, but because trying to do everything on your own can get heavy. There’s only so long you can keep all the ideas, decisions and pressure in your own head before something starts to feel a bit stuck.

The tricky part is not always recognising that you need support. It’s knowing what kind of support is actually right for you.

Because there are so many options out there, and they all sound quite similar on the surface.

It’s Not Always About Doing More

A lot of business owners I speak to assume the answer is to do more.

More networking. More content. More learning.

And while all of those things have their place, they don’t always solve the underlying issue. If anything, they can sometimes add to the noise.

What most people are actually looking for is a way to feel more grounded in what they’re doing, more certain in their decisions, and more able to follow things through without second guessing everything.

That doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from having the right kind of support around you.

Different Types of Support Do Different Things

Networking, for example, is brilliant for connection. It gets you out there, helps you build relationships, and reminds you that you’re not alone in it. For many people, it’s the first step in building confidence and visibility.

But networking isn’t always the place where you figure everything out. It gives you the conversations, but not always the space to properly work through what those conversations mean for you and your business.

That’s where something like mentoring comes in.

Mentoring gives you that space to pause, talk things through properly, and make sense of what’s actually going on behind the scenes. It’s where you can take all the ideas, opportunities and thoughts you’ve been carrying around, and start to turn them into something more structured and manageable.

And then there’s going it alone, which most of us do for longer than we probably need to. It can work for a while, but it often leads to that cycle of overthinking, second guessing, and putting things off that we talked about earlier this month.

So… What Do You Actually Need Right Now?

This is where it becomes less about what’s “best” in general, and more about what’s right for you at this moment.

You might need connection, if you’ve been feeling isolated or stuck in your own head. You might need direction, if you’ve got lots of ideas but no real focus.

Or you might need accountability, if you know what you want to do but you’re just not quite following it through.

For most people, it’s a combination of those things.

You Don’t Have to Choose Just One

This is something I always say - it’s not about picking one type of support and sticking to it.

Networking and mentoring can work really well alongside each other. One helps you build relationships and opportunities, the other helps you actually do something with them.

It’s about creating the right mix for where you are right now, rather than trying to force yourself into a one-size-fits-all approach.

If You’ve Been Feeling a Bit Stuck With It All

If you’ve read any of this month’s blogs and found yourself thinking “that’s exactly how I feel”, then this is your nudge to stop trying to figure everything out on your own.

You don’t need to have a perfect plan. You don’t need to have all the answers.

You just need to take a step towards the kind of support that’s going to help you move forward.

A Simple Place to Start

If you’re local to Shropshire and want to start by building connections in a relaxed, supportive environment, you’re always welcome to come along to one of my networking events. It’s a great way to meet other business owners and have honest conversations without any pressure.

And if you feel like you need something a bit more focused behind the scenes, mentoring might be the next step. That’s where we take everything that’s been sitting in your head and start to turn it into something clear, manageable and actionable.
