What If I Invest in Mentoring… and It Doesn’t Work?

It’s a question that doesn’t always get said out loud, but it’s nearly always there in the background.
What if I invest in this… and it doesn’t actually change anything?
Because when you’re running a business, every decision feels like it carries a bit of weight with it. Time, money, energy… none of it is unlimited, and you don’t want to feel like you’ve wasted any of it on something that doesn’t move things forward.
It’s Not Really About the Money
On the surface, it can look like it’s about the cost. That’s usually the first thing people mention. But when you actually dig a bit deeper, it’s not just about the money at all.
It’s about the worry of putting your trust into something and not seeing a return from it. It’s about wondering whether you’ll still feel just as stuck a few weeks down the line, just with less in your bank account.
And if you’ve ever tried something before that didn’t quite land how you hoped, that feeling tends to stick with you a bit longer.
What People Often Expect
Sometimes the hesitation comes from an idea of what mentoring is supposed to do. There can be this expectation that someone is going to come in, fix everything, and hand you a perfect plan that works instantly. And when that’s the expectation, it’s no wonder it feels risky, because business doesn’t really work like that.
Things take time. Decisions need to be made. Actions need to be followed through.
No one can do that part for you.
What Actually Makes It Work
What makes mentoring work isn’t someone having all the answers. It’s having the right space to work things through properly.
It’s being able to say what’s actually going on, not just the version you’ve been telling yourself or other people. It’s having someone who can help you untangle things, challenge your thinking when you need it, and bring you back to what really matters when everything starts to feel a bit noisy.
And most importantly, it’s about what happens in between the conversations.
The small decisions you make differently. The things you finally follow through on. The moments where something that felt complicated suddenly feels manageable again.
It’s Not a Magic Fix (and That’s a Good Thing)
If you’re looking for something that’s going to instantly fix everything overnight, mentoring probably isn’t it.
But that’s actually what makes it valuable.
Because instead of creating a quick win that doesn’t last, it helps you build something that you can carry forward. Something that makes sense for you, your business, and the way you want to work.
It’s not about changing everything all at once. It’s about creating enough clarity and direction that you can start moving again, without second guessing every step.
So… How Do You Know If It’s Worth It?
A better question to ask might be this: What happens if nothing changes?
If you carry on as you are now, doing everything in your own head, going round in the same loops, putting things off because you’re not quite sure which direction to take… where does that leave you in a few months’ time?
Because sometimes the bigger risk isn’t investing in support.
It’s staying exactly where you are.
If You’ve Been Sitting on the Fence
If this is something you’ve been thinking about for a while, it doesn’t have to be a big decision straight away.
You don’t have to commit to anything long-term or have everything figured out before you even start.
Sometimes it’s just about having a conversation, asking the questions that are on your mind, and seeing how it feels to talk things through with someone who understands where you are.
That alone can often give you more insight than trying to weigh everything up on your own.
