Why Running a Business Can Feel Lonely (Even When You're Surrounded by People)

When people talk about the challenges of running a business, they often mention things like finding clients, managing finances or trying to juggle everything on their to-do list. What doesn't get talked about quite as often is how lonely it can feel.

And the strange thing is, loneliness in business doesn't always look like being physically alone. You can have customers, colleagues, family, friends and social media followers around you and still feel like nobody truly understands the weight you're carrying. It's something that comes up in mentoring conversations more often than you might think.

Nobody Sees Everything You're Carrying

When you run a business, you're often the one making the decisions, solving the problems and carrying the responsibility. People might see the social media posts, the networking events, the finished projects or the business wins. What they don't always see are the doubts, the sleepless nights, the difficult decisions and the moments where you're wondering whether you're doing the right thing.

Even when you have supportive people around you, it can sometimes feel difficult to explain exactly what's going on in your head. That's often where the feeling of loneliness starts.

The People Around You Might Not Understand

Your friends and family may be incredibly supportive, but if they've never run a business themselves, there can be a gap between listening and truly understanding. You might try to explain why a quiet week worries you, why you're nervous about increasing your prices or why you've spent half an hour debating whether to send a particular email.

To someone outside of business ownership, those concerns can seem small. To you, they can feel huge because they're tied to your livelihood, your goals and something you've worked incredibly hard to build.

That disconnect can leave you feeling like you're carrying things on your own.

Social Media Doesn't Always Help

It's easy to look around online and assume everyone else has it figured out.

You see people announcing new clients, awards, launches and achievements. What you don't see are the difficult days, the mistakes, the setbacks and the moments of self-doubt. When you're already feeling overwhelmed, comparing your behind-the-scenes reality to someone else's highlight reel can make you feel even more isolated.

The truth is that most business owners experience challenges. Most people have moments where they feel stuck, uncertain or overwhelmed. They're just not always talking about it publicly.

Why Connection Matters More Than You Think

One of the biggest shifts I see in business owners happens when they realise they don't have to do everything alone. Sometimes that comes through networking. Sometimes it comes through mentoring. Sometimes it comes through finding a small group of people who genuinely understand the realities of running a business.

The practical advice is valuable, but often it's the reassurance that matters most.

Knowing that somebody else has faced similar challenges, asked similar questions or felt the same frustrations can make a huge difference.

That's one of the reasons I'm such a strong believer in networking. If you've ever wondered whether it's worth putting yourself out there, you might enjoy reading my blog on Why Networking Is Important for Small Business Owners (Especially in Shropshire).

You Don't Need Hundreds of Connections

A common misconception is that overcoming loneliness in business means building a huge network. In reality, it's usually about building meaningful connections. A handful of people you can be honest with is often far more valuable than hundreds of contacts you barely know.

The business owners who seem most settled and supported aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest networks. They're often the ones who have found their people. The people they can message when they're having a wobble, celebrate with when something goes well, or ask for advice when they're feeling stuck.

If You're Feeling This Way, You're Not Alone

If you've been feeling lonely in your business recently, you're certainly not the only one. In fact, it's one of the most common themes that comes up in conversations with business owners, particularly those in the early stages of building something for themselves.

The good news is that loneliness isn't a sign that you're doing something wrong. It's often a sign that you've reached a point where you need more connection, more support or simply more people around you who understand the journey you're on. And sometimes, the first step isn't finding all the answers. It's simply having a conversation with someone who gets it.

If running your business has started to feel a little lonely, you don't have to figure everything out on your own. Whether that's through mentoring, networking or simply connecting with the right people, support is available.
